Public Libraries and Effective Summer Learning

Opportunities for Assessment

June 30, 2016

The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) recently released a new report, Public Libraries and Effective Summer Learning: Opportunities for Assessment and executive summary.

The new report documents ideas exchanged by leaders from both inside and outside the library field at the National Forum on Effective Summer Learning in Libraries.

It highlights ways in which public libraries are evolving summer programming and exploring practices to assess effectiveness in achieving learning outcomes.

This work gives library leaders strategic concepts, emerging models and tangible action steps to initiate assessment of their summer learning programs, all of which are featured in the report.

Because of this work, education and youth development leaders across the country will have important conversations about the role of libraries in expanding summer learning opportunities that address the summer learning slide.

The report also provides the opportunity to engage your local government officials, partners and funders on the importance of libraries’ summer learning leadership and their impact on improving the lives of youth.

The National Summer Learning Association works with library partners such as ULC to develop and expand engaging and enriching summer learning to young people.
